TRAINING TIPS

Start your Training Early

For beginners, we recommend gradually training up to riding at least 70% of the distance you registered for. The more preparation you can do, the more fun you’ll have on event day.

Get a Proper Bike Fit

Having your bike professionally fit to your body will make riding more efficient and cause you much less pain and soreness during and after your ride. Most bike shops provide fitting services.

Use your Gears

Get comfortable and confident changing gears. When climbing hills shift into a gear that will keep your cadence high so you can make it up the hill without putting undue stress on your knees.

Dress for Success

Wearing bike-specific clothing will make for a more comfortable ride. We recommend owning the following items: Jersey and bib shorts, base layer shirt, gloves, arm and knee warmers, cap, light wind vest or jacket, & a winter riding jacket.

Stay Fresh

Try exploring new training routes. Training on a variety of routes will help you stay engaged and keep things interesting. You can use websites like Strava to find popular routes in your area.

Training Rides

Join us for training rides or contact your local bike shop to get info on group rides in your area. Riding with groups is the quickest way to meet other cyclists and learn from others.

Eat & Drink

While riding, follow this simple guideline to ensure your body has the fuel it needs to perform at it’s best:  Drink 1 water bottle and eat 100 calories per hour of riding.

Change your Pace

Don’t always ride hard, but don’t always ride easy either. For the best results, it’s important to mix up your pace. During your training, try throwing in 1-3 timed intervals (1-15 minutes) at a more intense pace.

Have Fun!

Always remember, training can be tough at times, but it’s important to enjoy your time on the bike as well.
